Studies have shown that there are so many benefits from practicing self-care. Doing it helps improve physical and mental well-being, lower stress, lower the risk of illness, and boost energy and mood. (1) There are so many ways to practice self-care, too! Here are some ways that you can practice self-care for International Self-Care Day (July 24) and every day! 

  1. Journal

Journaling is a great way to check in with yourself. Write about the events of your day, write about your goals and dreams, draw what you’d write about; there are so many ways to journal, and so many benefits from doing it.


  1. Meditate

Meditating can do so many things to help people. It can help calm you down and lower your heart rate, reduce stress and anxiety, and give a better sense of balance and calm. (2)


  1. Involve Your Senses

A great way to stay grounded and feel calmer is by involving your senses. This brings your mind and body into the present moment. Here are a few ways to involve each of your senses:

  • Touch: Get a facial, wear comfortable clothes, touch a soft blanket, pet an animal
  • Taste: Chew gum, eat your favorite food, try a new food
  • Hearing: Listen to music, go outside and listen to nature, call someone and listen
  • Sight: Watch your favorite show or movie, look outside, create visual art
  • Smell: Light a candle, smell your favorite food, take a bath using a bath bomb

  1. Be In Nature

Being in nature and outside helps so many people feel calm and happy. It’s a great way to practice self-care.


  1. Go On A Social Media Fast

Whether it’s for a week, a day, or just an hour or two, taking a break from social media can reduce mental illness symptoms, increase self-esteem, give better focus, and allow connections between ourselves and others.  


  1. Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. Exercise helps with physical and mental health, energy levels, and sleep quality, just to name a few of the many benefits it provides. (3)


  1. Set Goals

  1. Drink Water

One of the best ways to take care of yourself is by staying hydrated! Drink water alone, or try adding hydration or electrolyte packs into it for some flavor and an extra boost.


  1. Practice Gratitude

Did you know that gratitude can physically change your brain in positive ways? Consider journaling about 3 things you’re grateful for each day. 


  1. Take Time To Be Alone Or Connect With Others

Take some time to be by yourself and your thoughts, enjoy some quiet, and relax. Or, spend time with your favorite people and strengthen those relationships.
