The Metabolism Myth That’s Been Fooling Us for Decades

The Metabolism Myth That’s Been Fooling Us for Decades

How many times have you heard a middle-aged or older adult watch a twenty-something devour an entire pizza and remark, “Just wait till you’re my age—I wish I could still eat that much and stay thin!” It’s a common belief that metabolism inevitably slows as you age.

But new research challenges this idea.

Before Diving Deeper, Let’s Quickly Clarify What Metabolism Means

Metabolism is how your body turns food and drink into energy. It encompasses all the chemical reactions that keep you alive, like breaking down food and repairing tissues. Usually, when people mention metabolism and diet, they’re talking about Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)—the calories your body burns at rest.

Babies, kids, and teens have especially high BMRs because their bodies need energy to build bones, grow muscle, and develop the brain. It’s why teenagers seem to eat nonstop and stay skinny. This sharp contrast fuels the belief that metabolism slows with age, since adults eating the same way often find weight creeps on much more easily.

Does Metabolism Change As You Age?

Duke University decided to answer this question in one of the biggest studies on human metabolism ever done. Testing metabolic rates in people ranging from just 8 days old all the way up to 95 years old, they sought to determine how much and when metabolism changes throughout a lifetime, and the results were surprising.

As expected, they found that BMR is higher in children and teens and decreases as we approach 20 years old. The kicker was that, from age 20 to 60 years old (after adjusting for total lean body mass), BMR tends to remain relatively stable. That’s right—essentially no change.

This means that a 20-year-old and a 60-year-old with the same muscle mass should burn the same number of calories at rest each day.

Given these surprising findings, you might wonder: if metabolism stays the same, why does losing weight feel tougher as the years go by?

Lifestyle Changes

Losing weight can be tough, and it often seems more challenging as you get older. This isn’t so much about shifts in metabolism itself. It has more to do with how your daily routines and habits change as you get older, often leading to a slower pace of life.

After high school or college, you usually end up

  • Getting a job where you’re sitting all day

  • Getting busy and prioritizing exercise less

  • Eating more

  • Sleeping less

  • Experiencing more stress

All these things will cause you to burn fewer calories each day, no matter your age. This is what leads you to feel like your metabolism has slowed down.

The Solution

You don’t have to turn back the clock to keep your metabolism high, nor do you have to decide to become an Olympic athlete or marathon runner. Just get the right basic habits back in place. A few basic building blocks might include

  • Lifting heavy weights several times per week

  • Getting 8-10k+ steps per day

  • Choosing a diet high in protein

  • Prioritizing sleep

  • Managing stress

Start Where You Are, Build From There

If trying to implement all of this at once sounds like a tall order, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Try breaking down larger goals into smaller, more actionable steps to build momentum. Below is a sample list of micro-goals that can make getting started feel more manageable.

  • Set aside 20-30 minutes a few mornings or evenings a week to lift at the gym or do some bodyweight exercises at home

  • Take short walking breaks every hour to achieve 8-10k+ steps a day.

  • Incorporate a high-protein snack between meals.

  • Set a bedtime reminder to ensure you get consistent sleep.

  • Practice a quick two-minute breathing exercise to help manage stress.

Go for consistency and remember that progress matters more than perfection. Track your habits with a consistency metric, such as a 'movement streak' for daily steps or workouts. Focusing on positive habits supports your overall health instead of just weight loss.

Metabolism Slows as You Age: MYTH

Turns out your metabolism is more in your control than you may have thought.

By understanding the real story behind metabolism, you can make choices that actually impact your energy and health. The research shows that age isn’t the culprit behind a slower metabolism. Rather, it’s the lifestyle changes that we all seem to make as life goes on. Focusing on healthy habits can help maintain a strong metabolism at any age.

With the right approach, you can take control of your health and see progress, no matter where you are in life.
